It is my conclusion that Child 1, John is not the John who married Eunice Kirby, but instead the John Gifford who married Mary Easton of Nantucket.
Research on John Gifford and Eunice Kirby:
1.«tab»1850 Census, Westport, MA
John Gifford, age 58, married, farmer, birthplace: CT wife Eunice
«b»Source Citation:«/b» Year: «i»1850«/i»; Census Place: «i»Westport, Bristol, Massachusetts«/i»; Roll: «i»M432_309«/i»; Page: «i»467A«/i»; Image: «i»515«/i».
2.«tab»Society of Friends record at Rhode Island Historical Society for John and Eunice Kirby cites John's death on 2 Nov 1852
Source: Westport (MA) Monthly Meeting, " Births, deaths, marriages 1766-1967", p 68 manuscript, Rhode Island Historical Society, 121 Hope Street, Providence, Rhode Island 02906, Accessed 5 Sep 2013
3.«tab»In the "Deaths Registered in the Town of Westport (MA) in 1852":
2 Nov 1852: John Gifford, Married, Male, Westport, farmer, b. New London, CT, parents: William and Susanna
4.«tab»I believe that the John Gifford who married Eunice Kirby in 1810 was the son of William Gifford, son of Recompense Gifford, individual number 145 in the William Gifford of Sandwich, MA genealogy. (Vol. 135, pp 134-35). William Gifford married Susanna Brown in Lyme, CT. Among other children they had a son, John, who was born about 1783, which fits with the ages from the vital records above.
5.«tab»I have found consistent evidence that John and Eunice lived in Westport and no evidence that places this John in Little Compton.
Who, then, was the John Gifford, s. of Jonathan and Lois?
1.«tab»In the Massachusetts Vital Records to 1850 we find a reference to the marriage of John Gifford and Mary Easton at Nantucket. "John of Little Compton, Newport Co, RI, s Jonathan and Lois of Little Compton, RI and Mary Easton, d Peleg and Eunice, both dec'd of N, 19th, 3 mo, 1817 in N., CR4" CR 4 refers to Society of Friends records.
2.«tab»On April 22 1818 Jonathan Gifford and John Gifford of Little Compton sold land to an Ephraim Gifford (not the father of Jonathan). The transaction was also signed by Lois Gifford and Mary E Gifford, the wives of Jonathan and John. That these two couples shared a land interest supports the above evidence that John Gifford who married Mary Easton is the son of Jonathan Gifford and Lois Eddy.
