Strawberries

Susan, Richard (Barnes) and John

I always liked a garden and what it produced
Now I’ll tell how my cousin and I once reduced
Our Grandfather’s new prized strawberry bed
And their friends with all the big red berries we fed.

Richard was just two years older than I.
To do what he wanted I was eager to try.
He wanted some money, why not berries sell
I could pick them, the idea sounded swell.

We got up early, before family was around,
The baskets by us were easily found.
It didn’t take long, with big ones to fill,
We put them in our cart and went up the hill.

We sold them all and were back for breakfast
I think our project for only three days did last.
For at company dinner, they did discover
Where the big berries went. This ended our endeavor.

As I remember we both had to help weed,
In the big garden to pay for our miss deeds.
After that we picked strawberries just for family
And learned to earn a small amount annually.
